Donna Sep 19, 2006 11:16:05 | Yellowing poly on kitchen cabinets My kitchen cabinets are 13 yrs. old. They are made of oak - quality product- ok craftmanship. They were stained with a light oak oil based poly stain. The stain over the years has yellowed and in areas of high usage faded.I am looking for an economical way to clean them up and possible get rid of the yellow tint. Any products/suggestions. Many thanks, Donna, Cumming,GA USA |
Mark Sep 19, 2006 13:14:29 | RE: Yellowing poly on kitchen cabinets You can clean up the cabinets using Circa 1850 Furniture Cleaner. However, the yellow tint may be coming from a variety of sources. Based on your description, it sounds as though the yellow is actually coming from the varnish (you stated that several areas were faded). Please look at the surface and let me know if that is true. |

Eric Sep 27, 2006 17:53:42 | RE: Yellowing poly on kitchen cabinets If the yellow is coming from the varnish then the Furniture Cleaner can only do so much as it will not be able to remove what is IN the finish. You can strip off the varnish completely but that is a pretty time-consuming and labour-intensive job. The other alternative is to try Circa 1850 Stain 'n Varnish. This is a gel product that can go over an existing finish without stripping it down to the bare wood. It comes in a Natural as well as 15 other colours. By choosing a bit of a different colour from your light oak, you can 'cut' the yellow of your existing varnish. As you apply each coat, you are not only building a coat of colour, but you are also building a coat of protective finish - ideal for a high-traffice surface like kitchen cabinets. Shelley Jan 26, 2025 13:43:57 | lighten yellowed wood laminate cupboards Hi there, I have Ikea pine laminate? kitchen. Over time they have yellowed so much, like nasty yellow pine. Is ther anything I can use to lighten up the yellowing? Thanks |
Eric Jan 27, 2025 17:11:48 | Re: Yellowing poly on kitchen cabinets Shelley - unfortunately there isn't much that you can do with old laminate furnishings that have yellowed. You may try the Circa 1850 Stain 'n Varnish (listed in the posting above) which is a semi-transparent combination stain and varnish in a gel format. Depending on your color choice, this could modify your cabinets while allowing the wood grain to show through.
